Their eyes met, and the sounds of their battle crashing around them died as they hung in the air, suspended in the moment.  Both were deformed- one red-eyed, sharp-toothed and feral, the other more drastically, with too-long, raggy hair, plastic lips, horrible webbed fingers protruding from his back, and a frightening lust for power radiating from his glowing eyes.

The moment dragged on.  The only movement was that of the emotion in their eyes, conflicting and struggling to surface, or not to surface.  Rage and hurt and apologies invaded the red, mixing and blending into one indistinguishable, inexpressible hue.  Neither of the boys could do anything, rendered immovable by the force of the other's gaze.  

Maybe it was a delusion caused by the power unleashed and swirling around them, or even by the convulsions of their own hearts, but a golden light seemed to engulf them, shining so brightly they were blind.  After a moment, it faded enough so they could see again.  They were children, staring wide-eyed at each other, the anger felt for such a long time vanished, or maybe just explained.  One of them reached out, and the other followed suit more tentatively, but all hesitation was gone when their fingers touched and then hooked.  Firmly, and gently.

Naruto smiled happily at the other boy, and Sasuke's eyes widened a little before his features relaxed, returning the gesture.  Emotions wordlessly conveyed, apologies accepted and forgiveness granted.  They stood together, holding hands and smiling together, comfortably.  

It felt as if this moment could go on forever, and they wished it would.
